------------------------------------------------------------
SlingshoT is a versatile program launcher. While other
options have been made available over the years, users will
find SlingshoT easy, fast, practical and efficient. Please
see summary at end.
The object of this program is to place it in a readily
available position on your hard drive or boot disk. When run
(by double clicking on SLNGSHOT.PRG), the program will look
for a file on the current drive which was created by
SlingshoT during an earlier session. If no such file exists,
SlingshoT will poll your current directory for up to 12 .PRG
files and display them. You may run any of those programs
directly simply by pointing and clicking on the associated
letter or by pressing that same letter on the keyboard.
You may create one or more databanks of programs with
SlingshoT. This enables you to designate different programs
in different directories on different drives. This is
particularly helpful for those who have hard drives.
To enter a program name (including pathname), press the
letter or click on a letter of an unused line. By doing so, a
fileselector will appear. Manipulate the fileselector and
finally doubleclick on a program. When you do, the pathname
and filename will appear on the line. If the line is longer
than 30 characters, only the last 30 will be displayed.
NEW v1.01 enhancement: You may now point and click on a
pathname previously designated by the fileselector and type
any label you wish. I.E. "Word Processor", "Spreadsheet
v2.01", etc. The label will "stick" to the pathname as long
as one exists. This enhancement made at the suggestion of Mr.
David Cagle of Atari Corporation. . . Thanks Dave!
To change an existing line, point at the line with the mouse
and press ESC to erase the label or pathname. You may then
click on the associated letter to retrieve the fileselector
and designate a new pathname.
NOTE: when in edit mode (the cursor is visible), keypresses
will not activate programs.
You may save as many databanks of programs that you wish as
long as you give each one a unique name (with an .SST
extender). To save a databank of program names, click on
SAVE. A fileselector will appear with a default filename. The
default is the one which will be automatically loaded
whenever you start up SlingshoT in that resolution. This
means SlingshoT will always display only programs you use for
a specific resolution once you start saving databank files.
If you change the filename before you save it, you will have
to load that databank manually in the future.
SlingshoT will automatically load databank files for a given
resolution if such a file exists in the immediate directory.
To load a different one, simply click on LOAD and locate the
file.
ERASE allows you to delete a previously saved databank and/or
clear all the current entries.
EXIT allows the user to return to the desktop without
activating a program.
By clicking on the title bar, release and purchase
information will be displayed.
On contemporary TOS operating systems (Rainbow+) users may
highlight the SLNGSHOT.PRG program and call up the SET
APPLICATIONS options. By toggling AUTO, SlingshoT will
automatically pop up whenever the computer is first turned
on. Be certain to save the new desktop after making the
change.
NEW V1.2 Enhancement: SlingshoT v1.2 now behaves as a shell.
This solves a couple of issues which have bothered me while
in development. Now the "launched" programs can find their
associated data files such as .CNF,.CFG, etc. In addition,
the environment returns to SlingshoT once the launched
program has been exited.
I have yet to see new applications which do not eventually
find their way to "argue" with other applications. This
especially applies to desk accessories and autoload
applications. SlingshoT has been tested with Flash, ST
Writer, ST Copy, Disk Doctor, Thunder and other popular
programs which seem to have traditional tendancies in the way
they address memory and install themselves. I noted that v1.1
did not appear to work with NeoDesk until NeoDesk was exited
since NeoDesk is actually a shell in itself. I should think
this version might solve that problem. Certainly, someone
somewhere will find a few applications which appear to
"argue" to hard. In such a case, try juggling the order which
all the programs and accessories load and see if the problem
can be corrected.

NOTE TO RESELLERS:
SlingshoT is an ideal opportunity to make life real easy for
computer beginners. In just a few minutes, you can customize
a menu specifically for any customer. With a little
preparation, you can assemble educational, productivity,
communications diskettes designed for your special
presentations to schools and other local institutions.
Remember that the GEM environment is easy for those of us who
know better, but many new users will not be familiar with
it.
TIP: When making a formal presentation, digitize the logo of
the company or organization you are approaching. You'll
immediately earn their undivided attention and they'll think
about how they will brag to others how their system is
customized just for them. This applies to the Portfolio too!
Please be fair with the methods you use to distribute
shareware based software.
